Spring Break and Mountains to climb

In Uncategorized on March 23, 2009 at 4:47 am

Hey All! I am again behind in my updates for you! I have now on spring break and have been enjoying the first couple of days in Everson, Washington with my roommate Cj and his girlfriend Lacy. We have spent a couple days touring Everson (okay a few minutes) but it has been quite enjoyable. We went and saw Ryan Styles put on a improv show on Saturday night and had a blast laughing our pants off in the Bellingham High Auditorium. This morning we spent the lunch hours at Cj’s grandmothers house and I met a lot of his family. We then spent a few hours up in Canada since Lacy had never been there. We tried to find a hill that had been told to have the mystical powers to run water uphill. We failed in our attempts however to find it, but it was still a good trip. We went and shopped a little in the stores before returning to Everson and have been spending the day watching a movie and having a fun time watching the Amazing Race. Those wondering when I will be in Marysville you will not have to wait much longer. I will be in town tomorrow afternoon probably around 1 or so. We plan on being in town for a few days together before Lacy and Cj will take off to go to Lacy’s home in Montana. I will be in town until Sunday and will leave after ill church. I look forward to seeing many of you! Now on to the stuff that usually comes with these emails, the school info, work, etc. I am sure you are all wondering how thsoe finals went! I had three finals since you last heard from me. On Tuesday I had my most draining final Precalc at 4 in the afternoon, meaning I missed a couple hours of work, but obviously for good reason. I know that I ended with an 82% on the final which was what I had figured I had done while taking it. I spent 2 and a half hours taking it and was dead when I returned to my room for dinner. Wednesday found me in my final education class of the quarter, this final did not take long and I know that I did really well in the class overall. My final final was in geology and I hope to have done pretty well on that one as well. I will let you all know next week how my week has gone and how my grades were as they will be released on Tuesday. I expect to get pretty close to a 4.0 in at least two of my classes with mid 3’s in my other two which is still really well. Work is still continuing in our room, we all will miss it this next week and we hope to continue the rest of the year in high spirits! Well as this quarter winds down it brings me into the next quarter that is sure to bring great fun. I already bought my books for my classes my favorite of which being the nine books that I have obtained for my Children’s lit class I have already read one and am well into another with two more brought home with me on spring break. The one that I finished is called Kampung Boy which is a book about a boys journey into adelesence it is written in a quick moving way with pictures taking up much of the pages. It is set in a south east Asia country and the boy is in a Kampung or a little village that he rarely sees the outside of. It was pretty good. The book that I have now jumped into is called Three Cups of Tea and is about Greg Morenson a man who travels to the Karakoram Mountains in Pakistan and he stumbles into a village where there is no school. He promises to return and build the children a school, over the next 10 years he builds 55 schools and still continues this day building schools. So for now as it is 945 at night I will bid you adue and see some of you soon! Brandon

Short, Late, but a great weekend!

In Uncategorized on March 16, 2009 at 7:21 pm

Hey all! I know I am a few days behind my normal day to send these out! I did not send one this past week because I took off on Friday right after my classes finished up and went to Tall Timber for what was a wonderful weekend in the snow and amazing people! I will delve into that story near the end! As far as everything else I am doing well! School last week was really good, it is considered dead week, the week right before finals. Math finished up the series that we had been going over, and ended with a review on Thursday and the last exam which I got a B on. I ended up getting an extra 6 points on my Exam Three from a couple weeks ago due to extra credit given this past week bumping that grade to an A. Chicano Studies finished up on Friday with a final multiple choice test. Geology is winding down this coming Friday at 8 am with its 55 question multiple choice final. Education had its last class date on Tuesday with a final this coming Wednesday that is also multiple choice and I will get my portfolio which contains articles relating to teaching, and my teaching philosophy. Math’s final is tomorrow at 4 and I expect to do well of all of them! Work last week went fairly well. We were however without kids as they had conferences and had only half days of school. We diligently stayed behind to watch the classroom and get some more hours just in case some of the kids showed up! We have a guy come in each Wednesday to teach the kids something about Music who has agreed to teach me and one of my coworkers how to play the guitar! Which is quite exciting! Other than that not much news for work this week! Adventures come and go, this week saw no adventures as we all buckled down for this coming week! Many of you I am sure are wondering what my spring break plans are! I will be back in Marysville a week from today with Cj and Lacy staying until Wednesday at which point they will continue to Montana to visit Lacy’s Family I will be In Everson with them this coming weekend. We will leave on Friday as soon as I am done with work! I look forward to seeing many of you next week! As far as the snow retreat Tall Timber is simply amazing and served as a great break from life. With no cell service you can easily get away from the problems of life as the snow tumbles down around you. I thank my dad for driving so much to come get me and bring me home and back to school. This weekend brought a great time to be with a lot of people from the church that I miss seeing weekly while I am here and also brought some excercise and laughs and just great joy. I am quite sore after a weekend of Cross Country Skiing, tubing, running, a night game, and just hanging out. I really did enjoy my weekend up at the ranch and cannot thank anyone enough for letting me come! I will be off for now I miss and love you all! Brandon

The final push, tickets, and a heartfelt shoutout!‏

Hey Everyone! It is Saturday Morning and I can hardly believe how fast this quarter has gone by! We are rounding the final corner this next week as we prepare for finals and even take a couple of them before our final stretch in two weeks! I am very excited to come home in a couple of weeks! This week had another blur of activity as all of my days got a lot shorter because of a very good reason! Classes are still going well. I got my first ten on a lab this quarter for my water table lab (running water and ground water lab along with the porosity of rocks). It was very exciting to have finally gotten full points on a lab, although I have come close before, it goes to show that Geology is a tough class, and not my best subject! The midterms continue to come for Geology, as a matter of fact I have one to finish up by Monday! Chicano Studies is rapidly winding down, I am possibly taking my final for that class on Friday, it will be another 20 question test multiple choice, I do not see a bad grade coming from that class at all. Education is also winding down with only one more class day before the final I am diligently working on a few things to be put together for a portfolio. First I am looking for three items of print (either from the newspaper (which I have a lovely stack of here) or online sources) to write three one page papers on that reflect on the story and the impact that they will have on my teaching career, and me as a teacher. Another paper I am working on for that class is about the three things that I learned while in Education 201, this one is a simple paper made harder by narrowing it down to just three, I have no doubt that in the end I will come out on top of it though! The last, and most important, paper that I am writing for Education 201 is my teaching philosophy. I am bringing in what I believe is the way teaching should happen, I am describing how I will teach in my classroom, I do this all with the view that no one has the stake on the “right way” to do anything in this world your way is as good as mine, and mine as good as yours. I look forward to writing it and putting my foot further in the education door. Finally, we have math! Oh my lovely math, I got a B on the test I told you all about last week, not too bad. I am this week working on sequences, which I remember slightly and have helped others with this year before, so I am getting a handle on them. It is all a matter of being able to put it all together and come up with an equation and also recognizing them as such. I had a rather hard one the other day on a quiz (that thankfully we were allowed to take home and work on) that really had me stumped I did not know what to do, so I want to issue it to the Math types on my list and see if you can come up with an equation for it! We have been using the (a sub n) types, but if you used y= it would still be the same! So here is our sequence: 1,1/2,3,1/4,5,1/6 Good luck! So as to my days being uncommonly shortened is due to one very good thing, work. Simply I worked 15 hours this past week passing an average 2 week work week by 3 hours in time. It has been great to be reopened and fully running again. We have not had a great turn out for the most part, only 2 kids and 1 extra volunteer everyday. Monday we did, however, have 6 kids total with 5 “supervisors” which was good! We have been doing many different activities than we used to have. Our video games are obsolete and missing in storage, so we are without those. We continue to do our homework hour at the beginning of the day, followed by snacks, then a free time which has changed. We are bringing in Joe, our music guy, once a week on Wednesdays to help the kids learn beats, rhythms, how to play a couple of different instruments. We are celebrating many different holidays that line the months. Last Monday was Dr. Suess Day, so we brought in some Dr. Suess books, coloring pages, and Horton Hears A Who. Yesterday Oreo Cookies turned 97 years old so we celebrated the first day they went on sale in stores with cookies and milk. We have a library card that we will put to use next week as we walk to the Cheney Public Library and check out books for the kids to read during their hour of homework if they do not have homework! It has been good and I know it will continue to go well! As far as adventures go, I do have one for you this week. Tuesday morning was just like any other day, I woke up at 6, got Cj up and went to the shower. I changed clothes, and sat at my computer until seven at such a time that I went to breakfast and class. After my 9 am Geology class I rushed back to the dorm, much to my relief before the clock struck 10. For this was the day, that I would do the thinkable, the knowable, nothing touching the impossible, I would -gasp- buy concert tickets. I logged in to buy Taylor Swift tickets for the 14th of May at the Spokane Arena. I was able to secure floor seats for myself and Krista, a co-worker, who wanted to come with! I now have the tickets (along with two that Cj purchased) locked away in a secret place that no one will ever know about! I cannot wait until that day! It will be terribly exciting! Anyways I hope that was a good enough adventure for you all! I know, I know, it wasn’t that exciting, but I thought you all should know about it! Track team! I hope you all had a wonderful first week of practice (along with any of you who play other sports, I just tend to favor my sports)! I hoep to come see you run in a few different meets this year! Mr. Davis, Mr. Reichel, or Mrs. Edens, I am wondering if one of you could send me the track schedule for the year? Just as an attatchement is all, so that I have it that would be great! If you could tell everyone hello for me that would also be wonderful! Visit my blog! Brandonnobach.wordpress.org I hope you all have a great weekend and a great week! Love and Miss you all! Brandon
